Attack on Pearl Harbor Game: A Casual and Colorful WWII Flight Combat Game

He had been assigned to investigate the ad and ran into nothing but dead-ends. It had been placed across the counter in New York and paid for in cash. Both the main ad and the smaller lead-in ads had been set in type somewhere else and a matrix pulled for delivery to the New Yorker. The clerk who had accepted the ads had no recollection of who placed them, and neither the game that was offered in the double-entendre copy nor the company whose signature was on the ad existed. So my friend had drawn a total blank, and it was still eating at him. He was convinced that someone -- for reasons he couldn't fathom -- had been instructed to convey information about the upcoming attack in this manner.

Attack On Pearl Harbor Game

A woman who says she is the widow of the man who invented a game called "The Deadly Double" denied that advertisements for the game published in 1941 carried any warning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

"If these seem farfetched," Roger Paul Craig, an officer of the company, tells us, "you should see the complicated evidence that was marshaled to show that the numbers on the dice which the game (the Deadly Double) is played clearly announced the date of the forthcoming attack, 12-7. In other acrostic arrangements of the visible numerals, together with incongruous calculations based on the number of advertisements and the page numbers in the magazine, an additional code message to alleged Axis agents was read into the copy."

In New York, that December Sunday was a big day as it marked a meeting between local rivals New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds. The two football teams were in the middle of the afternoon game when word of the Pearl Harbor attack started to spread.

It was just before 1 PM Eastern Time when the teams took the field. At that time, Pearl Harbor was still an hour away from the time the Imperial Japanese Navy launched its assault. Even as the attack was unfolding, the game went on as normal, no one at the Polo Grounds having any inkling of the horrors that were hitting the island of Oahu.

Uh gaijin you forgot the EVENT part of this event, i want to play ON the pearl harbour map and attack the ships there just like it happened IRL.Also, bring back the pacific maps for air rb, i miss torpedo bombing

The only significant innovation employed by the Japanese Navy was the use of air-launched torpedoes against the ships in Pearl lagoon. A year earlier, the Royal Navy had used slow Swordfish torpedo planes to attack the Italian fleet at its base in Taranto. The success of that attack was not lost on Tokyo. The U.S. Navy had dismissed its relevance to Pearl because Taranto's harbor was around 75-feet deep, almost double the depth of Pearl Harbor, and it did not believe that air launched torpedoes would work in shallow waters. The Japanese Navy solved that problem by modifying their torpedoes to give them a flatter glide path.

Publicised in newspapers, TV, cinema and games all over the world, the attack on Pearl Harbor ranks consistently among the most frequently told stories of 20th century wartime reporting. The events of 7 December 1941 were not only the tragic escalation of a long-brewing conflict between the U.S. and the Empire of Japan, but also triggered America to enter theongoing Second World War, leading to profound consequences on a global scale. We intend to honour the memory of this fateful day with a dedicated special for our virtual pilots, bringing you exclusive offers, missions and an insightful recap in the history flashback below.

Attack on Pearl Harbor is an aerial combat game that allows players to relive the action-filled dogfights of the Pacific Theater of WWII as both Japanese and American pilots. Featuring arcade-styled gameplay, an accessible interface and extensive tutorials, players can quickly jump into the cockpit and take part in exciting aerial battles. Richly detailed graphics, graphic-novel inspired cut-scenes and realistic radio chatter round out the experience. Attack on Pearl Harbor features four solo campaigns, a "quick play" dogfight mode as well as multiplayer (12-player LAN and Internet) action. In addition to the initial Japanese attack on Oahu, the game also offers a host of famed and challenging scenarios such as the Battle of Midway, Iwo Jima, Doolittle Raid and the Liberation of Manila. Each campaign spans several months during 1941-1945, presenting an exciting and varied selection of missions.

The Pearl Harbor attack is known for its overwhelming surprise, spectacular explosions and countless heroic acts. But there were also internal Japanese disagreements about warning America, a mysterious board game and at least one unlikely friendship spawned 50 years after the bombs dropped.

The game can be played by two players or as a solitaire game with the player controlling the Japanese. The turn sequence is controlled by the playing card deck; each card drawn allows the American player to activate anti-aircraft guns, move ships out of Battleship Row, launch P40s and P36 fighters and raise the alert level at the air bases and harbor. The Japanese player can launch fighters as well as torpedo or dive bombers, attack with the air units, fly back to re-arm at his carriers or even attack with Kairyu mini subs. Optional rules cover the early return of the USS Enterprise with its compliment of F4F Wildcat fighters!

Aside from the limited options on the American side, the game has a few weaknesses. The Record Track could use a turn-counter marker, and a few of the rules need clarifying. I found the "attack group wave" rules to be a little confusing. Nonetheless, Day of Infamy: The Attack on Pearl Harbor is a fun and fascinating game with tons of replay value (especially for the solitaire gamer).

The U.S. Navy conducts Grand Joint Army and Navy Exercise 4, a war game in which U.S. aircraft carriers launch 152 planes a half-hour before dawn about 40 miles north of Oahu. The attackers catch the defenders by surprise.

U.S. Navy conducts Fleet Problem XIX, a war game that tests Pearl Harbor defenses against an air assault. An aircraft carrier 100 miles north of Oahu launches its aircraft at 4:50 a.m. The planes successfully attack Ford Island and Hickam and Wheeler airfields.

In November, British carrier-based airplanes bomb Italian navy ships at Taranto harbor in the Mediterranean in a night attack. One battleship is sunk and two more are damaged. The Japanese secretly study the attack.

About the time the game kicked off at 2 pm local time, events that would change the world were happening 5,000 miles away. Japanese fighter planes attacked the United States from the skies over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. 2,403 Americans were killed and another 1,178 were wounded. Eighteen ships were sunk or run aground, including five battleships. America was at war.

Spotlight: Commemorating World War II The Defense Department, then called the War Department, began conducting exercises and ramping up war production in preparation for conflict, should it come. The draft, known then as the Selective Training and Service Act, was instituted on Sept. 16, 1940.Before 1940, the U.S Pacific Fleet had been based in San Diego. President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the Navy to move the base to Pearl Harbor. On Oahu, coordination between the Army and Navy was poor, James C. McNaughton, who served as command historian for Army Pacific from 2001 to 2005, said. The Army and the Navy on Hawaii had separate chains of command, and they engaged in very little coordination, at least in practical terms.Early Sunday morning on the day of the attack, Navy Adm. Husband E. Kimmel, commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet, and counterpart Lt. Gen. Walter Short, commander of the Army Hawaiian Department, were preparing for their weekly golf game, a regular event that enabled them to "check the box" for joint coordination, McNaughton said.

Many military officers were attending a football game at the Polo Grounds when they learned about Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. But on the afternoon of Dec. 7, Donovan was just another football fan at the Polo Grounds. In the middle of the game, he heard the plea of public address announcer, Arthur Daley (the New York Times sports columnist who would later win the Pulizer Prize): "Colonel Donovan, please go to the box office at once." Donovan left his seat but paused at the exit to watch Pug Manders plunge across the goal line for the Dodgers' second touchdown. As the crowd cheered, Donovan made his way down to the box office, where a telephone lay uncradled on the desk. An awed Giants employee told him, "The White House calling, colonel."

I remember exactly where I was december 7th 1941 at 1:30 p.m. I joined some of my friends for a game of baseball in my home town in Puerto Rico. Half way through the game, someone approach the ball field with the news that the navy base in Pearl Harbor was under attack by japanese planes. The game broke up and everybody headed home to listen to the radio. At the time I was 12 years old, but I had eight older brothers of military age. As a result, two joined the Army, another joined the Navy, another chosed the Coast Guard and the oldest already was an old sea wolf in the Merchant Marines. The other two helped in the construction of the navy base in the island. Oddly enough, I was the only one of the brothers to see action later on in the Korean War as a Combat Medic with the 65th Inf. Regt. of Puerto Rico. My daughter, Juanita who is an english school teacher, is always asking questions about life in Puerto Rico during WWII and my time during the Korean Conflict. I love to talk about it!

For years leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Prince Fumimaro Kanoe of Japan had harbored disdain and distrust of the U.S., and he wrote an embittered essay in 1918 warning against British and American racial and economic imperialism.

Our illustrious Captain ran our ship aground in pearl harbor and had to be emergency dry docked. I got out of the Navy about 4 months before he did it, so I wasn't onboard when it happened. With our previous (and much better) Captain were were in and out of Pearl 4 times with out incident.
